What is ICSI?

ICSI is a short form for “Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.” Don’t worry, the name sounds big, but the meaning is simple — the doctor gently puts one sperm inside one egg in a lab. This helps the egg to start growing into a baby step called an embryo.

Later, the tiny embryo is placed softly inside the mother’s uterus. ICSI is very helpful when the father’s sperm is weak, very few, or when IVF did not work before. It gives the sperm extra help to meet the egg.

🧪

Careful Lab Work

Doctors pick one healthy sperm and gently put it inside the egg under a microscope.

🌱

Embryo Starts

The egg and sperm together become an embryo, the first tiny start of a baby.

🫶

Gentle Process

Doctors make sure every step is soft, careful, and safe for parents.

How ICSI Works

ICSI happens in a few simple steps. Doctors may change the plan a little to match each person’s body and health. Here is how it usually works:

Step 1

Preparation

The mother gets some medicines so her body can make eggs. The father gives sperm for the doctors to use.

Step 2

Egg Collection

Doctors gently take the eggs out from the mother. It is safe and quick.

Step 3

Sperm Injection

One sperm is placed inside one egg with a very tiny tool. This helps them join together.

Step 4

Embryo Transfer

The small embryo is softly placed inside the uterus. After 2 weeks, a test checks for pregnancy.

Simple timeline: 1–2 weeks of medicines → eggs collected → sperm injected → embryo grows for a few days → embryo placed in uterus → test after 2 weeks.

Who ICSI Helps

ICSI is most helpful when sperm is too weak to meet the egg naturally, or when IVF (another method) did not work. It gives the sperm and egg a little extra support to start a baby’s journey.
